What are the differences between the two types of laser eye surgery: PRK versus LASIK?

PRK was the first laser procedure to use the excimer laser for reshaping the surface layer of the cornea. PRK was approved by the FDA in 1994 but has actually been used on the surface of the cornea since 1988. It is considered to be a stable and predictable procedure. Because the very surface layer of the cornea, the epithelium, is an irregularly thick layer, it must be removed before a laser can be applied to the surface of the cornea. After the laser eye surgery procedure, it takes usually about three to seven days for the epithelium to resurface the cornea.
During this time, the patient's vision is not very good, and the eye is somewhat uncomfortable (it may feel like there is a grain of sand in the eye). Modern variations to this technology -- including cold application, the newer, smoother lasers, and LASEK -- have dramatically decreased the discomfort associated with PRK-related recovery. Still, healing time remains at about a week, with patient's vision rapidly improving over the next few weeks. You may elect to do both eyes the same day or wait two weeks before doing the second eye.
LASIK is a newer laser eye surgery procedure (1995) that involves lifting the protective flap of the cornea with a mechanical instrument called a microkeratome, or a newer, femtosecond laser called IntraLase®. The excimer laser treatment is carried out just as it is in PRK, on the bed of the cornea, where then the flap is repositioned onto the cornea. Because of this protective flap, the epithelial surface layer of the cornea is left intact, so LASIK's healing time is faster and less uncomfortable than it is with PRK. However, the process of making the flap adds a surgical risk to LASIK that is not present with PRK. To complicate matters, PRK carries an additional small risk of the complication of haze, a complication only rarely seen with LASIK. Confused? The next section will help you understand the relative risks and benefits of LASIK and PRK, so that you can decide which procedure is best for you.

Los Angeles LASIK Surgery for Better Vision

Poor eyesight is an inconvenience that may be a result of short or long sightedness. Over the past two decades, the field of ophthalmology has made advances and come up with LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) that may restore sight to damaged eyes. Though a common procedure, patients should take care to research about it. Patients should investigate surgery options and try to get as much information as possible about the procedure and the hospitals that perform the surgery. The following 4 factors may play an important role in deciding on the surgery
·         Who is suitable for LASIK?
·         Where is the surgery performed?
·         What does the treatment involve?
·         How much does LASIK cost?
An Overview of the Procedure
People wearing glasses and contact lenses and are 18 years or older may be suitable candidates for Los Angeles LASIK surgery. However, pregnant or breastfeeding women and people suffering from vascular diseases that may leave blood vessels prone to damage may be advised against the treatment. In LASIK surgery, an incision may be made in the cornea with a precision blade to produce a flap which the surgeon may fold back to reveal the corneal tissue beneath. Whether or not LASIK is the right procedure may be determined by the degree of sight deficiency that needs to be corrected. A standard LASIK surgery may cost anywhere from $635 to $2000 per eye.
LASIK tries to restore the flap to the original position and hold it in place on the corrected cornea by virtue of surface tension. This ability of the LASIK flap to the cornea is limited. If it also does not heal completely, any trauma to the eye may cause the flap to reopen exposing the cornea to infection. FDA and American Academy of Ophthalmology has developed guidelines as per which a person looking for LASIK should be at least 18 years of age or, 21 years in some cases. Similarly, people who use prescription medicines such as Accutane or oral predinosine are suffering from diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, glaucoma, herpes infections of the eye or cataracts are suggested to avoid the procedure.
The Right Surgeon for Better Results
It is important to find a qualified and experienced LASIK surgeon to perform the procedure. The skills of the surgeon are as important as an office equipped with great technology. There are different types of LASIK surgery Los Angeles, one bladeless LASIK and the other that uses a blade. Whether done with a total laser or a combination of a laser and a blade, it may require the expertise of a skilled surgeon to cut a thin hinged flap in the cornea of the eye. The laser may then reshape the cornea to improve vision. Though both methods are available, some less experienced doctors claim bladeless technology to be completely safe.

Why Having Perfect Vision Does Not Mean You Have Perfect Eye Health

Most people only visit their optometrist if their vision starts going, need an updated prescription, or have eye issues or injuries that need immediate medical attention. But just like visits to your dentist and general practitioner, you should schedule regular check-ups for your eyes.

It is important to get regular eye health check-ups in order to maintain the overall health of your eyes. Regular checkups can screen and test for eye diseases and conditions, such as glaucoma and cataracts, for which early detection is incredibly crucial in preserving long-term eye health.

In the case that glaucoma has been detected, glaucoma medication or an ocular surgery such as laser trabeculopastyor canaloplastymay be necessary in order to treat the glaucoma and its symptoms. And for cataracts, treatment typically involves the use of Cataract Surgery in Santa Monica.

Not only are regular check-ups important for the prevention and early detection of eye health issues, but they are very important for maintaining your vision. If it has been a while since your last visit to the optometrist for the purposes of updating your eyewear prescription, then chances are you are long overdue for an eye checkup. Updating your prescription is important in making sure that your vision does not get worse because wearing outdated prescription eyewear will actually make sure vision worse.

You may not know this, but your eyes are great indicators of deeper, serious health issues, such as the onset of diabetes and certain types of cancers, as symptoms of certain health issues tend to present themselves within the physiology and structures of the eye and its surrounding areas.

It has been recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology that children get their eyes checked immediately after birth, at the age of 6 months, when they turn 3 years-old, and then once again right before they enter school. It has been recommended that everyone should get at least one eye exam during their 20s and have their eyes checked at least twice while in their 30s. For adults who are at least 40 years of age, it is recommended that they get their eyes checked at least once a year.

For people who wish to get rid of their glasses or contacts by getting their vision corrected should consider laser eye surgery, such as the Lasik procedure. Just as for any other surgical procedure, the most important thing a patient can do to ensure that they obtain the laser eye surgery that they need is to do their homework and find the best fitting Lasik Surgeon in Los Angeles to perform the procedure.

Besides making regular visits to your optometrist, you should eat a healthy, balanced diet and wear sunglasses on sunny days to maintain your eye health.
